Dr. Debra Price, Dermatologist with Baptist Health South Florida, says one of the challenges dermatologists face is to convince people to protect their skin from the sun. "I think the most important thing to do is to protect your skin in every way possible. The first thing is to apply a sunscreen, to wear protective clothing, to try to avoid mid-day sun exposure, and to seek shade when we can."

Sun Damage and Skin Layers

"The first is the epidermis or the most superficial portion of the skin, and this is where a lot of skin cancers originate; the second is the dermis, where we have our collagen and elastin; and of course the deeper layers (the fat and the muscle beneath the skin)," she says.

Skin Cancer and Tanning Beds

90% of skin cancer is caused by not just sun exposure, but tanning beds. Dr. Debra Price, Dermatologist with Baptist Health South Florida, explains the UVB and UVA rays from the Sun enter the skin and they cause damage to the DNA of the cells of the skin. "Our body tries to repair that damage, but unfortunately we're not able to repair it all, so it creates mutations or abnormalities in those cells, which caused them to multiply abnormally and create skin cancers."
